VS Pritchett Memorial Prize. Royal Society of Literature prize for stories between 2,000 – 4,000 words. Margaret Drabble is one of the judges. Closing date : 16.6.14. Prize: £1,000. The winner will be published in the RSL Review and Prospect magazine. Entry: £5.
Writers’ Village Bursary Competition. Quarterly competition from the Writers’s Village website, it offers an interesting opportunity for debut novelists. Closing dates: 30.6.14, 30.9.14, 31.12.14. Prize: £500 and your novel assessed by literary agency A M Heath. The eight shortlisted entrants will receive a brief commentary on their submission from Award judge Michelle Spring. Entry: £14.
Small But Mighty Writing Competition. Stories of up to 500 words written by children aged between 7 and 11. Any topic Closing date: 1.7.14. New Guard Literary Review Competitions. Run by US literary magazine New Guard, the prize is for fiction up to 5,000 words & poems up to 150 lines. Closing date: 14.7.14. Prizes, each category: $1,000. Entry: $15.
Fylde Brighter Writers Circle Prize 2014. Short stories up to 2,500 words, poems up to 40 lines, flash fiction up to 350 words. Closing date: 19.7.14. Sterts Theatre One-Act Play Competition. Write a one-act play with four characters, with a performance time of 30 minutes. Closing date: 31.7.14. Luke Bitmead Writers’ Bursary Competition. SaveAs Writers The Bigger Picture Competition. Canterbury’s SaveAs Writers -prose and poetry inspired by any work of art associated with World War One – a painting, a song, a poem, a film or a soundtrack. Manchester Writing Competition. This international competiton from Manchester Metropolitan University celebrates ‘the substantial cultural and literary achievements of Manchester’ Poems and short stories. Poetry Prize – submit a portfolio of three to five poems, no more than 120 lines in total. Fiction Prize – a story up to 2,500 words in any genre. Closing date: 29.8.14. Prize (in each category): £10,000. Entry: £17.
Cheshire Prize for Literature. Annual -open to writers with a connection to Cheshire. Prose up to 1.500 words; poems up to 100 lines. Closing date: 1.9.14. Prizes: 1st – £2,000. Homeless Writing Competition. This national contest from the Yorkshire charity SASH aims to raise awareness of the issues around youth homelessness. Stories of up to 3,000 words, any genre with the theme ‘Homeless’. The judge is award-winning author Ross Raisin . Closing date: 10.10.14. Prize: A five-day residential Arvon writing course. The winner and runners-up will be published on the SASH website. Entry: £10.
