VS Pritchett Memorial Prize.  Royal Society of Literature prize for stories between 2,000 – 4,000 words. Margaret Drabble is one of the judges.  Closing date : 16.6.14. Prize: £1,000. The winner will be published in the RSL Review and Prospect magazine. Entry: £5.

Writers’  Village Bursary Competition. Quarterly competition from the Writers’s Village website, it offers an interesting opportunity for debut novelists.  Closing dates: 30.6.14, 30.9.14, 31.12.14. Prize: £500 and your novel assessed by literary agency A M Heath. The eight shortlisted entrants will receive a brief commentary on their submission from Award judge Michelle Spring.  Entry: £14.

Small But Mighty Writing Competition. Stories of up to 500 words written by children aged between 7 and 11. Any topic  Closing date: 1.7.14.   Prizes: 1st – A bundle of writing goodies and your story published on the website. Runners-up (2) – £5 book voucher.  Small but Mighty Short Story Competition. Open to young people aged 12 to 15, up to 1,500 words on any theme.  Closing date: 1.7.14.    Prizes: 1st – A bundle of goodies to help you get started with your wrting, plus publication on the website.  Doris Gooderson Short Story Competition.Annual competition run by theWrekin Writers of Shropshire. Any theme with no more than 1,200 words. Closing date: 14.7.14.   Prizes: £150, £70, £40. Entry Fee: £3.

New Guard Literary Review Competitions. Run by US literary magazine New Guard, the prize is for fiction up to  5,000 words &  poems up to 150 lines.  Closing date: 14.7.14.   Prizes, each category: $1,000. Entry: $15.

Fylde Brighter Writers Circle Prize 2014. Short stories up to 2,500 words, poems up to 40 lines, flash fiction up to 350 words. Closing date: 19.7.14. Prizes: Short Stories – £200 plus trophy, £50, 3 x £25. Poetry – £100 plus trophy, £50, 2 x £25. Flash Fiction – £100 plus trophy, 3 x £25. Winners will be published in an anthology.  Entry: Short Stories – £5 each, £10 for three. Poems and Flash Fiction – £3 each, £5 for three.

Wasafiri New Writing Prize 2014. From ‘Wasafiri’  literary magazine – three categories (Poetry, Fiction, Life Writing) open to anyone anywhere in the world who has not published a complete book. Poetry category – up to five poems. Fiction and Life Writing categories – up to 3,000 words. Any theme.  Closing date: 25.7.14. Prize (in each category): £300. Winners published in Wasafiri   Entry: £6 for one category, £10 for two, £15 for three .

 Highlands & Islands Short Story Association Competition. Worldwide competition Stories of up to 2,500 words, any theme.  Closing date: 31.7.14. Prizes: 1st – £400 plus writing retreat. Runners-up (2) -£50. Entry: £5 each, £12 for three.

Sterts Theatre One-Act Play Competition. Write a one-act play with four characters, with a performance time of 30 minutes. Closing date: 31.7.14.  Prizes: 1st – cash prize plus the play produced in Sterts studio. Runners-up (2) – Cash prize and a staged reading of the play. Extra prize for a play with a Cornish theme.  Entry: £6.

Wells Festival of Literature Writing Competition. Poem up to 40 lines; short story 1,000-2,000 words; crime novel: submit a first chapter, up to 3,000 words, plus a synopsis between 500-1,000 words. Closing date: 31.7.14. Prizes: Poetry & short story, each category, £500, £200, £100. Wyvern Prize for local entrant: £100. Crime Novel: £100, winning entry read by major publisher & leading agent. Entry: Poetry &  Short Story:£5. Crime Novel: £10.

Closing August

Luke Bitmead Writers’ Bursary Competition. Submit the first three or four chapters of your completed novel plus a synopsis and a personal statement introducing yourself & why you would benefit from the bursary. UK residents, first-time, non-published authors of adult fiction. Closing date: 1.8.14. Prize: A publishing contract with Legend Press, £2,500 cash bursary. Entry: Free

Word Hut Short Story Competition. Open worldwide, this regular contest from The Word Hut website is for stories of up to 1,000 words on any theme and in any genre.  Closing date: 3.8.14.   Prizes: £70, £35, £15. Winners will be published on the website.  Entry: £4.

 SaveAs Writers The Bigger Picture Competition.  Canterbury’s SaveAs Writers -prose and poetry inspired by any work of art associated with World War One – a painting, a song, a poem, a film or a soundtrack. Poems up to 50 lines; prose up to 3,000 words.  Closing date: 23.8.14. Prizes : £50, £30, £20. Shortlisted entries will be published in a pamplet.  Entry: Postal – Poetry £2, prose £3. Electronic entries – £2.50, £.50.

Manchester Writing Competition. This international competiton from Manchester Metropolitan University celebrates ‘the substantial cultural and literary achievements of Manchester’ Poems and short stories. Poetry Prize – submit a portfolio of three to five poems, no more than 120 lines in total. Fiction Prize – a story up to 2,500 words in any genre.   Closing date: 29.8.14. Prize (in each category): £10,000.  Entry: £17.

Closing September

Cheshire Prize for Literature. Annual -open to writers with a connection to Cheshire.  Prose up to 1.500 words;  poems up to 100 lines. Closing date: 1.9.14.  Prizes: 1st – £2,000. Additional prize money of £750 will be awarded at the judges’ discretion and the best entries will be published. Entry: Free

RAC Short Story Competition. The theme is ‘Driving Abroad’  Up to 1,000 words. Closing date:11.9.14  Prizes: 1st – £500 plus RAC European Breakdown Cover for a year, plus publication in the RAC magazine. Runners-up (2) – £100 in M&S vouchers. Entry: Free

Erewash Writers’ Group Open Short Story CompetitionStories up to 2,000 words on any theme. Closing date: 18.9.14. Prizes: 1st – £100. 2nd – £50. 3rd – £25. 4th – £25. Highly Commended (2) – Free entry for 2015. Entry: £3 each, £5 for two, £2.50 thereafter.

Bedford Writing Competition. New international competition – 3,000 words on any theme.  Closing date: 30.9.14.  Prizes: £100, £70, £30. Entry: £5 each, £10 for three. Students – £3.

Closing October

The Prolitzer Prize 2014. Fiction and creative non-fiction that challenges, engages and entertains. 2,500 word limit for entries.  Closing date: 1.10.14. Prizes: 1st – £150 and publication in the anthology. Runners-up (2) – £50 and possible publication.  Entry: £4 for the first, £3 thereafter.

Homeless Writing Competition. This national contest from the Yorkshire charity SASH aims to raise awareness of the issues around youth homelessness. Stories of up to 3,000 words, any genre with the theme  ‘Homeless’. The judge is award-winning author Ross Raisin .  Closing date: 10.10.14.   Prize: A five-day residential Arvon writing course. The winner and runners-up will be published on the SASH website. Entry: £10.

NUHA Foundation Blogging Prizes 2014. The competition has been established as an international platform to debate issues of education and development. It has three categories: Adult, Youth, Young Writers.  Closing date: 12.10.14. Prizes: Adult – £150. Youth – £100. Young writers – £50. Entry: Free.

The Rubery Short Story CompetitionInternational, for short stories of up to 3,000 words. Closing date: 31.10.14.  Prizes: £500, £150, £50. Entry: £7.50.

Flash 500 Novel Opening Competition. Write a novel opening plus a one-page synopsis of the rest of the story. Up to3,000 words. Closing date: 31.10.14.  Prizes: £500, £200.  Entry: £10. Optional critique: £25.
