Prepare to be scared – 5 novels for Halloween

The ritualUnder a week to go, so here’s our recommended 5 horror, spooky tales that’ll have you keeping the lights on.

I remember you by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir  The crunching noise had resumed, now accompanied by a disgusting, indefinable smell. The voice spoke again, now slightly louder and clearer: ‘Don’t go. Don’t go yet. I’m not finished.’ In an isolated village three friends set to work renovating a derelict house. But soon they realise they are not alone there. One of the best, most terrifying ghost tales in recent memory- partially a mystery, but also an eerie ghost story about missing children, an isolated house in the Icelandic fjords, love, bullies and loss. Not gory but chilling.

Adam Nevill The Ritual  – Nevill is one of the best British horror authors writing today. The Ritual takes us into the wild boreal forests of northern Sweden where four university friends reunite to go hiking. They soon find themselves lost and terrified, stalked by an unknown but malevolent entity. Riveting storytelling that barely lets you catch your breath.

Help for the haunted by John Searles –It begins with a call one snowy February night. Lying in her bed, fourteen-year-old Sylvie Mason overhears her parents on the phone across the hall. This is not the first late-night call they have received, since her mother and father have an uncommon occupation: helping ‘haunted souls’ find peace. Yet Sylvie senses that this call is different from the others, especially when they are lured to the old church on the outskirts of town. Once there, her parents disappear, one after the other, behind the church’s red door, leaving Sylvie alone in the car. Not long after, she drifts off to sleep, only to wake to the sound of gunfire. Creepy.

Joyland by Stephen King No list would be complete without a Stephen King and we’ve got a lot of copies of this  Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, ‘Joyland’ tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. Dev begins to realise that Joyland is haunted by the ghost of a girl murdered on a thrill ride.

NOS-4R2: 1938: a novel by Joe Hill.  –Summer. Massachusetts. An old Silver Wraith with a frightening history. A story about one serial killer and his lingering, unfinished business. Anyone could be next. We’re going to Christmasland. ‘NOS4R2’ is an old-fashioned horror novel in the best sense. Claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying, this is a story that will have you on the edge of the seat while you read, and leaving the lights on while you sleep.
